 John Howland Award

Receipt Deadline: August, 31, 2008

 

 It is time again for members to submit nominations for the American Pediatric Society's highest award, the John Howland Medal. This award has been given since 1952 to honor those who, by their contribution to pediatrics, have aided in its advancement. As indicted in Article II of the Society's Constitution:

The objectives of this Society shall be to bring together men and women for the advancement of the study of children and their diseases, for the prevention of illness and the promotion of health in childhood, for the promotion of pediatric education and research, and to honor those who, by their contributions to pediatrics, have aided in its advancement.  

This Article forms the actual basis for the selection of the Howland Recipient.

The first recipient of the Howland Award was Dr. Edwards A. Park of Baltimore. A complete list of recipients of this award can be found below.

The APS Council will meet in the Fall of 2008 to consider the nominations that have been submitted by members (Active, Emeritus or Honorary) to the APS. To aid in the selection, the nominators are requested to submit the information noted below.

Complete Nomination Packets Must Contain the Following:

  1. A nomination letter (original and one copy) which indicates in detail the nominee's outstanding contributions to pediatrics and the reasons for the selection. (APS Officers and Council Members are not eligible to submit nominations.)
  2. Supporting letters from TEN MEMBERS (original and one copy); Active, Honorary or Emeritus members are eligible to submit Support Letters. Support letters may be sent under separate cover, however must be received no later than August 31, 2008. (APS Officers and Council Members are not eligible to submit Support Letters.)
  3. Current  Curriculum Vitae of the nominee (two copies).
  4. Two representative publications (at a minimum) by the nominee (two copies of each).

Nominations submitted from 2006 – 2008 will be considered for the 2009 award, upon receipt of a letter from the Original Nominator requesting such. Additional letters of support from APS Members only may also be sent.
