Call for Abstract Submissions
Submit Your Best Research to the PAS Annual Meeting

Plan Ahead!

The abstract receipt deadline is
Tuesday, December 15, 1998.

We would like to invite you to submit your best research for presentation at the 1999 Pediatric Academic Societies’ (PAS) Annual Meeting, which will be held in San Francisco, Saturday, May 1 – Tuesday, May 4. The heart of the PAS Annual Meeting is the work submitted by the memberships of the three sponsoring societies (APS, SPR and APA). The Annual Meeting offers a unique opportunity for you and your colleagues to present interesting, new and innovative research and engage in collegial interchanges. Highlights of the state of the art, topic symposia, hot topics, mini courses and educational seminars for 1999 are located on page 6.

We strongly encourage you to submit your abstracts electronically. Last year, 1,989 abstracts were submitted and 88% were submitted electronically. The electronic submission of abstracts helps us contain costs and facilitates the dissemination and publication of the abstracts. Please take a few moments to review the submission formats available this year. Several improvements have been made which we hope will make the submission process as simple as possible for you. As always, we welcome your suggestions.

On-Line Submission is the easiest and most preferred method for abstract submissions. Features include:

  • The web site is available 24 hours a day until 11:59 p.m. CST on December 15th from any location that has access to the Internet
  • Multiple authors can easily review and/or work on the abstract from different sites (but not at the same time, please)
  • Abstract payment available on-line New
  • Supports graphic images New
  • Tables and images can be placed in the body of your abstract New
  • Supports tables (with special characters/symbols)
  • Supports Greek characters and special symbols
  • Notification of receipt and acceptance status is provided via e-mail (if address provided)
  • Ability for user to log in and check abstract receipt and acceptance status

The second option for electronic submission is the Download/Upload Submission Program. Features include:

  • Requires user to have an e-mail system that allows attachments
  • Supports tables (without special characters/symbols)
  • Supports Greek characters and special symbols
  • Supports graphic image attachments New
  • Notification of receipt and acceptance status is provided via e-mail (if address provided)

Abstract Submitter Disks are available in a very limited supply this year in both Windows and Mac. Of the 2000 disks shipped last year, only 10% were actually used to submit abstracts. The program is identical to the download/upload program. Producing mass disks is expensive. This format should only be used if you are unable to submit using one of the methods noted above (on-line or download/upload). Do not order these "as a back up". There are minimal system requirements.

Submitting on Paper Forms is highly discouraged! This format should only be used by individuals who do not have access to the Internet to access the on-line or download/upload programs or do not have the minimal computer hardware requirements for the abstract submitter disk. These abstracts must be rekeyed into the electronic formats by staff before the review process and publication of our journal. Special formats you wish to use for paper abstracts, if not available in electronic formats, are not retained.

A few things to keep in mind when submitting electronically:

  1. You still have to send a hard copy (the final version which is printed from the submission program). There are two reasons: 1) we must have your payment (if you did not use the on-line submission which allows on-line payment); and 2) it protects you. It allows us to verify that your abstract has been received and that no data has been corrupted or lost when the file is transferred. This is crucial to the quality control and verification process.
  2. Tables and graphic images can now be placed within the body of your text. Wrap around text is not possible.
  3. Technical Support: We encourage you to take a few moments to read all of the submission instructions before you call for help. We are here to help you through any technical support needs you or your assistant may have when you begin the process of preparing and submitting an abstract. However, please expect delays if you wait until the last minute to begin. Despite our best attempts to handle the load of those last minute panics, we cannot handle all 2000 at once. Take a few moments to read the "helpful hints" for abstract creation and submission, which can be found on page 20.
