1999 SPR AWARDS
Call
for Nominations
E. Mead Johnson Award for
Research in Pediatrics
This award was designed to honor and
recognize outstanding scientific contributions and
attainments in research related to pediatrics.
Each of two recipients will receive an
honorarium of $10,000 plus travel expenses to the
Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting where
recipients will present their research.
Eligibility for the 1999 award:
- Nominees must have received their
first doctoral degree in 1979 or later.
Exceptions to the stipulation may be made by the
committee for individuals who have interrupted
their research career for 2 or more years but who
are otherwise eligible.
- Limited to investigators in the
Americas.
- Research must be related to
pediatrics and published recently, perhaps coming
to fruition or attaining recognition during the
past few years.
- Candidates are nominated by their
Department Chair, past E. Mead Johnson award
recipients, any scientific colleague or members
of the pediatric academic societies.
- The awardee will be required to
provide a manuscript summarizing the text of the
presentation for publication in Pediatric
Research. Recognizing the potential concern
of publishing preliminary work, the awardee will
be able to edit the manuscript accordingly.

Richard D. Rowe Award in
Perinatal Cardiology
This award in perinatal cardiology was
established in 1989 by colleagues, trainees and friends
of Dr. Rowe to honor his many personal achievements,
commitment to academic excellence, integrity and
humility.
Eligible candidates must fulfill the
following conditions:
- First authorship in an abstract
submitted to the annual meeting of the Society
for Pediatric Research in the field of perinatal
cardiovascular development
- Have M.D., or Ph.D. or equivalent
degree
- Be within 3 years of completion of
post-doctoral education (individuals who are in
the process of obtaining such an education, but
have already completed original work are
encouraged to apply).
The application involves the following
(submit 5 total copies):
- Checking the appropriate box in
the abstract form
- A sponsoring letter from a member
of the Society for Pediatric Research. This
letter should contain a short appraisal of the
candidates academic achievement and
potential and clearly outline his/her
participation in the work contained in the
abstract
- A copy of the candidates
curriculum vitae
The winning candidate is selected by a
committee of the SPR on the basis of the candidate's
academic achievement and potential and the quality of the
work presented in the abstract. The award is presented in
a cardiology session at the spring meeting of the
Pediatric Academic Societies and carries a monetary
prize of $1,000.

House Officer Research Award/Student Research
Award
These awards were designed to encourage
pediatricians in training to pursue careers in academic
pediatrics.
Eligibility for the 1999 award:
- The awards of $1,000 each are
presented to the recipients at the Pediatric
Academic Societies annual meeting. There
are up to three awards in each category.
- Applicants are judged on a
first-authored abstract submitted for
presentation at the annual meeting.
- Nominees must be first author of
the abstract and will present the awarded
abstract in the format to which it is selected
(subspecialty, theme or poster).
- The research work and the abstract
for which the awards are given must be submitted
to the Society for Pediatric Research as follows:
Student Research Award: Submit
prior to the student receiving his/her M.D. or Ph.D.
House Officer Research Award: Submit prior to the
completion of residency.
Fellow Basic Research Award: Submit prior to the
completion of fellowship.
Fellow Clinical Research Award: Submit prior to
the completion of fellowship.

Young Investigator Award
This award was designed to honor and
recognize young physicians as they embark on a career in
investigative pediatrics.
One award per year is presented and
provides an honorarium of $2,000 plus travel expenses to
the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting
where the recipient will present his/her work.
Eligibility for the 1999 award:
- Eligible nominees may hold the
rank up to and including Assistant Professor.
They may not be promoted to Associate Professor
prior to nomination and must be less than 40
years of age at the time of the annual meeting at
which the award is presented.
- The winning applicant is selected
on the basis of published research.
- The awardee will present his/her
research work during the plenary session of the
Society for Pediatric Research at the annual
meeting.
- Nomination must be made by a
member of the Society for Pediatric Research.
- The awardee will be required to
provide a manuscript summarizing the text of the
presentation for publication in Pediatric
Research. Recognizing the potential concern of
publishing preliminary work, the awardee will be
able to edit the manuscript accordingly.
