Eastern Society for Pediatric Research (ESPR) The ESPR held its annual meeting on February 27 - March 1, 1998 at the Marriott Seaview Resort just outside Atlantic City, NJ. The meeting was well attended and extremely successful. There were 28% more abstracts presented than last year. These were presented at sessions in General Pediatrics, Endocrinology/Metabolism, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease, Renal, Pediatric/Neonatal Pulmonary, Developmental Biology and Neonatology. The Educational Session included the Second Annual District III Perinatal Pediatrics Conference, organized and moderated by Thomas E. Wiswell, M.D., FAAP. Due to the overwhelming success of this year's meeting, next year's annual meeting will also be held on February 26-28, 1999 at the Marriott Seaview Resort in Atlantic City. Abstract forms will be available in September 1998. The deadline for submission of abstracts is November 2, 1998. We expect that next year's meeting will be bigger and better than ever. Mark your calendars. If you haven't received an announcement about the meeting yet and you are interested in submitting an abstract and/or attending the meeting, contact Mitchell J. Kresch, M.D., Secretary/Treasurer of the ESPR, at the address listed below. At last count, there are 457 members of the ESPR. Our members hail from the Northeastern part of the North American continent, from Washington, D.C. to Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec, Canada. | Midwest Society for
Pediatric Research (MWSPR) The Midwest Society for Pediatric Research, Inc. has 400+ members. Our 1998 annual meeting was held concurrently with the Midwest Section of the American Federation for Medical Research, the Central Society for Clinical Research, the Midwest Region of the Society of General Internal Medicine, and the Society for Investigative Dermatology September 16-18, 1998 at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. In addition to our own societal plenary sessions and subspecialty platform session on developmental biology, invited state-of-the-art speakers included Drs. Evan Snyder from Boston Children's Hospital ("Neural stem cells: developmental insights suggest novel strategies for gene therapy and repair of the CNS"), Steven Rothman from Washington University ("Glutamate receptors and the pathophysiology of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury"), and Olaf Dammon of the Harvard Developmental Neurology Network ("Intrauterine infection, cytokines, and periventricular leukomalacia"). A workshop on "Manuscript Preparation for Peer-Reviewed Publications" was offered by Drs. Stephen Daniels and Thomas Welch, both from the University of Cincinnati and Associate Editors of The Journal of Pediatrics. The Annual Founders' Award was presented to Dr. Laurence A. Boxer of the University of Michigan for his many contributions to pediatric research in general, and neutrophil biology in particular. Two awards luncheons honored trainees and junior faculty members who won several research prizes. This year there was also a trainee breakfast on academic career development with invited speakers and society officers and a breakfast for academic training program directors.

| Southern Society for
Pediatric Research (SSPR) The SSPR was organized in 1960 to provide a forum for pediatric investigators from the South to present their work. The SSPR has approximately 850 active members. The SSPR meets each year in New Orleans, LA, in conjunction with regions VII and VIII of the Ambulatory Pediatrics Association, the Southern Section of the American Federation for Medical Research, the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Society for General Internal Medicine. The SSPR sponsors a Basic and a Clinical Young Investigators Award competition each year and also has an active Trainee Travel Award program to encourage meeting attendance by students, house officers, and fellows. The SSPR also provides two or more workshops on important research and academic skills each year. The 1999 meeting of the Southern Societies will feature workshops on applied clinical epidemiology, medical writing, evidence-based medicine, and transitioning adolescents with special needs into adulthood. 1998 SSPR Officers: President: President-Elect: Secretary-Treasurer: SSPR Meeting Dates and Locations: Active Members: approximately 850 Abstract Deadline for 1999 SSPR Meeting - Thursday, October 8, 1998 |

| Western Society for
Pediatric Research (WSPR) The Western Society for Pediatric Research has approximately 553 active members and 100 emeritus members. The Carmel 1998 meetings will be remembered for the great El Nino storms. Despite lack of power and drenching downpours, spirits remained high and the members' commitments to the Carmel meeting was evident in both large and small sessions. The Society's commitment to good science and the encouragement of young investigators was demonstrable. It is likely that January 1999 will find the sun shining and the whales jumping in the ocean off Carmel once more. But whatever the weather, this meeting remains a favorite and should be on the top of members' priority lists, particularly because it offers a phenomenal opportunity for presentation by students, residents and young faculty. We are extremely excited about the upcoming 1999 meetings and have implemented several new features which we hope will become a regular part of the annual Carmel meetings. Please read on for more on these special sessions. We urge you to come Wednesday afternoon, January 27th, so as to participate in a symposium, Career Development in Pediatrics and to attend the Intersociety Cocktail Party which is open to all and was a big success last year. Please note the Carmel meetings are approximately one week earlier than usual due to the timing of the AT&T golf tournament. Also note that we will offer CME credit this year! 1998 Officers: President: President-Elect: Secretary-Treasurer: WSPR Meeting Dates: Abstract Deadline for the 1999 Meeting - October 5th, 1998 |
