Summer Student Research
Program The Student Research Program of the American Pediatric Society and the Society for Pediatric Research was instituted in 1991 to encourage highly qualified medical students to consider careers in pediatric research. This program is specifically designed for students seeking a research opportunity at a school other than their own. Since that time there have been 897 applications to the program and 262 students have been successfully placed in laboratories. We are hopeful that our NIH grant application will be renewed again. The generosity of the APS and SPR membership combined with support from Ross Laboratories, Mead Johnson Nutritionals and the International Pediatric Research Foundation has allowed additional students to participate in the program. Without these funds, gifted medical students would have a very limited chance to take part in pediatric research experiences. For the program to continue to be successful we are encouraging all members of the APS and SPR to work with their institutions to encourage first and second year students to apply to the program. Information packets are available from the Central Office of the APS/SPR. Information is also available on our Website. A special thanks goes to Thomas Hansen, M.D. for his time and dedication to this project for the last 7 years and we also want to thank Deb Zirkle for the work she contributed to the program over the past 3 years. Deb decided to return to the Chicago area and will be greatly missed for her many talents towards the Student Research Program and central office. Thanks to the following Principal Investigators and their associates for hosting one or more of our 30 students this year: Steven Abrams, Baylor College of
