FOUNDATION FOR PEDIATRIC RESEARCH As we have described in previous newsletters and mailings to members, the Foundation for Pediatric Research has been established to secure the future of the societies. Through the Foundation, we have established a goal of raising a two million dollar endowment. In the initial phase of this drive to raise funds, we need to ensure the commitment of our membership. In the near future, a member point person from each institution will be contacting individual members who have not yet pledged. Our initial goal is to have 100% of the APS and SPR membership to have contributed. This will go a long way in our effort to secure external contributors. If you have not already donated, please contact the Central Office to obtain a pledge form. Even a small contribution will help! Wed like to thank all members who have made contributions over the past year. Below are individuals who have contributed since October 1998.
STUDENT RESEARCH PROGRAM The Student Research Program of the American Pediatric Society and Society for Pediatric Resarch was instituted in 1991 to encourage highly qualified medical students to consider careers in Pediatric Research. Our NIH grant application has been renewed for another 5 years and will fund 30 students each year. Interest in the program continues to grow and we have just completed processing 174 applications for the 1999 program, which is a 159% increase over the number of applications the previous year. The staggering number of applicants is a record high for the program! One of the SPR Student Research Awards will be presented to Tim C. Lee during the SPR Presidential Plenary on Monday, May 3. It is very exciting for the Student Research Program to have one of its participants receive such an honor. If you are attending the PAS and your schedule permits, please try to view these presentations by the Student Research Program participants:
We are extremely appreciative of the continued generosity of the International Pediatric Research Foundation, Ross Laboratories and Mead Johnson Nutritionals who have provided support to the program over the past several years. Wed like to give special recognition and thanks to the following department chairs and associations with the pediatric academic community who have responded to our request to help support additional students from the program this year. Without their additional support, many students would not be able to participate. Association of Medical
School Pediatric Department Chairs, Inc.
