From May 12 – 16, the PAS and American Academy of Pediatrics will meet together in historic Boston. Our theme for this unprecedented pediatric educational experience will be "Advancing Children’s Health". We will be joined by our colleagues from the Association of Pediatric Program Directors, the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, who will participate both in joint and independent activities.

Our mission continues to be to sustain high quality research, probe challenging and new areas of knowledge, and to present the best of pediatrics for both the academician and clinician. We’d like to encourage all members to participate by submitting your own high quality new science, and encourage your colleagues and trainees to do the same. For the first time, we will have a single joint PAS abstract submission and review process between the APS, SPR and the Ambulatory Pediatric Association. The abstract submission deadline will be December 8, 1999.

Thanks to all members who responded to our request for program suggestions. The list of ideas and volunteerism is quite impressive! The Year 2000 Program Committee, chaired by Dr. Sam Hawgood, and joined by the affiliate societies, met recently and began the process of identifying and organizing the state of the art program. Below we have highlighted the tentative program topics selected to date:

This is only the beginning! A lot of work remains and the Program Committee will meet again early this summer to select the remainder of the invited science program. Be on the look out for further program information as it develops. If you haven’t attended in a while, we promise this will be a unique educational experience you won’t want to miss!

Bring your Family - Boston offers a wonderful educational experience for your family too! We will offer childcare, family programs and tours, or your family can explore on their own. Historical siteseeing venues include The Freedom Trail, Paul Revere’s House, Old North Church, and Faneuil Hall, the newly-restored USS Constitution, the U.S. Navy’s oldest commissioned ship and a ride on the Public Garden’s famous swan boats, just to name a few.

Other "must-see" family favorites include the New England Aquarium, the Museum of Science and its four-story Omnimax Theatre; and the world-famous Children’s Museum with its "do-touch" exhibits. There are also Harbor excursions and whale watch trips.

Cultural offerings include the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Ballet and national and local productions in the Theater District. Boston’s art museums include the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Institute of Contemporary Art — present exhibitions that are always inspirational, sometimes provocative. The world’s only Computer Museum demystifies technology; the Kennedy Library and Museum provides an absorbing look at a critical period of American history.

We look forward to welcoming you, your trainees and your families to our celebration of the new millennium!
