The presidents of the four societies: Joshua I. Goldhaber, Western Society for Clinical Investigation (WSCI); Christina Surawicz, Western Association of Physicians (WAP); Charles Edelstein, Western Section American Federation for Medical Research (WAFMR); and yours truly at WSPR, with great support from Past President Marilyn Jones, have organized a great program for 2006.

Some highlights to pique your interest:

  • The WAP is presenting a session on "Pathophysiology of Septic Shock: New Knowledge and New Treatment Opportunities" on Wednesday, February 1, 2006, 2:30–5:00pm, Sunset Center-Carpenter Hall.

  • On Thursday, February 2, 2006, the Joint Plenary Session theme is "Stem Cell Research." Part I, scheduled for 8:30am–12:00pm, and Part II, 1:45–4:00pm, will be presented at the traditional quaint Pacific Repertory Theater-Golden Bough.

  • The WSPR has invited David Magnus, Ph.D., Director for the Stanford University Center for Biomedical Ethics to address new regulations and ethical challenges.

  • Fred Levine from UC San Diego will speak about stem cells and diabetes mellitus. Congratulations to Dr. Levine who will be the WSPR Stanley Wright Memorial Lecturer.

  • Other speakers in this program are Renee Reijo Pera, W. Robb MacLellan, and Ken Kaushansky.
