Heather Herson Burris, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Assistant Professor of Environmental Health at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. She is an attending neonatologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. After growing up in Connecticut, Dr. Burris went to Philadelphia where she obtained her BA in anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and her MD from Temple University. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She then moved to Boston for neonatology fellowship at Harvard. She obtained her MPH from the Harvard School of Public health through the Harvard Pediatric Health Services Fellowship.

In addition to caring for her patients and her family, Dr. Burris spends her time examining how epigenetic mechanisms might underlie racial/ethnic and social disparities in birth outcomes. She has been mentored by several epidemiologists and physician scientists including Martha Werler, ScD, Matthew Gillman, MD, SM, Robert O. Wright, MD, MPH and Andrea Baccarelli, MD, PhD. Her work is funded by a K23 career development award funded by NIH/NIEHS, the Charles H. Hood Foundation, the Klarman Family Foundation, and the Harvard Catalyst. She leads a work-in-progress group called NeoWIP for Boston academic neonatologists, fellows and other investigators to present their work at any stage (www.neowip.weebly.com).
